Walking along, singing a song, skating in a winter wonderland ! Yes, we woke up this morning to snow here on Tomakomai in Japan, and we’ve had snow showers all day.
Today was a strange game day as the game against Slovakia this afternoon had no bearing on the medal games and it would be the Slovaks who we knew we would face on Saturday for the Bronze medal.
The day started with a 50 minute practice session at 9am. We worked on some passing drills and then spent the majority of the time playing 5v4 Regroup and Breakout versus Penalty Kill. The PK is something we’ve worked hard on over here to get the team playing zonal marking on the PK and then man marking when even handed.
After practice myself and Shirley, the Team Manager, met with the IPC to talk about the British game and the changes that have taken place in the past 6 months. We talked about player, team and the sports development along with the new nations in Europe who are now setting up national teams. There is definitely a lot of scope for us to work with our Euro neighbours to develop the sport and players.
After a quick spot of lunch it was back to the rink for the game. We used to game to rest players and play different experimental lines. We conceded a goal in the opening period and that was to be the only score of the game. Both myself and the Slovakian Coach didn’t play the lines we will play in the medal game tomorrow.
Dinner and a game debrief with the team was then followed by a Directorate meeting back at the rink. We went over feedback on the tournament from the coaches, officials and organising committee along with the schedule for the medal games and the medal and closing ceremonies.
Saturday at 11am local, 2am UK, we play for the Bronze medal. Everyone on our team has a different reason for wanting that medal, but as a team we all have the single goal of taking home that small bit of extra luggage !
